Choosing a Flybarless System: The Best Options for Your RC Helicopter
From open-source Rotorflight to premium Mikado VBar, Spektrum, Spirit, iKON2 and more — a practical guide to the main flybarless systems for RC helicopters, their strengths, weaknesses and the radio protocols they support.
Why the flybarless unit matters
The flybarless (FBL) unit is the heart of a modern RC helicopter. It replaces the mechanical flybar, stabilising all three axes and dictating everything about how the machine flies. Choosing the right one is one of the most important decisions you will make for your helicopter.
Today's pilots have more good options than ever, from free open-source software to premium flagship controllers. Here is a practical look at the main systems on the market, their pros and cons, and the radio link protocols they speak.
Rotorflight: the open-source option
Rotorflight is the open-source flybarless software built on Betaflight, and it is completely free. You flash it onto any compatible flight controller, which means you can put together a capable system for as little as $30 to $150 in hardware.
It brings the drone flight controller ecosystem to helicopters: a governor with precompensation, advanced digital filtering, blackbox logging, rescue mode and LUA scripts that let you tune at the field straight from your EdgeTX or EthOS transmitter.
The catch is the DIY approach. Rotorflight requires soldering, wiring and firmware flashing, and setup has a steeper learning curve than most turnkey units. It supports a modern protocol lineup including ELRS, SBUS/SBUS2, F.PORT/F.BUS, Spektrum SRXL2 and TBS CRSF.
Spirit: smooth feel and deep integration
Spirit is a polished premium system known for its exceptionally smooth flight feel and cross-platform software that runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. It also happens to support helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.
Standout features include configurable electronic paddle simulation (so you can tune the flybar feel), a full rescue mode, GPS navigation and return-to-home via the optional GeoLink module, a governor for electric, nitro and gasser models, and intelligent vibration analysis.
Protocol support is among the broadest in the market: PWM, PPM, S-BUS, DSM2/DSMX satellites, SRXL/SRXL2, JETI EX Bus, UDI, SUMD, JR X-Bus and FrSky F.Port, plus deep radio integration with Spektrum, Jeti, FrSky and Graupner. The main downsides are the higher hardware cost and that GPS needs the extra GeoLink module.
Mikado VBar: the premium flagship
Mikado is the pioneer of flybarless systems, and the VBar EVO is its flagship. It packs a 500 MHz processor with the highest computing power on the market, dual sensors and frame rates up to 1 kHz on the swash, making it a favourite for serious 3D flying.
V8 firmware brings optimised control filters, dynamic swashplate rotation and Tail Torque Extension for motor-driven tails. The optional Pro Rescue license adds rescue capability, and the system covers electric, nitro, gasser and even turbine models.
Where VBar really shines is its ecosystem. The VBar Control radio and proprietary VLink protocol offer deep, purpose-built integration, and it also accepts DSM2/DSMX satellites, SBUS and SRXL2. The trade-off is price and lock-in: the EVO runs around $260 to $290 USD, the VBar Control radio is a separate investment, and VLink is proprietary to Mikado.
iKON2: the widest protocol support
MSH's iKON2 is built around vibration resistance, an easy setup wizard and a rescue mode that auto-levels while adding collective pitch to arrest the descent. The Mini iKON2 weighs just 11 grams yet is rated for helicopters up to 800 size.
It includes a built-in governor, event logging, real-time telemetry such as a fuel gauge, low-battery alerts and thermal overload protection, plus polarity protection on every pin.
What sets iKON2 apart is sheer radio compatibility. It supports SRXL2 and SRXL, DSM2/DSMX satellites, SBUS/SBUS2, Jeti EX Bus, JR X-Bus, SUMD, FrSky F.Port/F.Bus, TBS Crossfire, ELRS, FlySky i-Bus and PowerBox P2Bus. If you want one FBL unit that works with virtually any radio, this is the one.
Spektrum: seamless, but closed
The Spektrum FC6350HX brings AS3X and SAFE technology to full flybarless control. Its big selling point is that it is set up and tuned entirely through Forward Programming on a compatible Spektrum transmitter, with no separate device required.
It offers SAFE self-leveling beginner modes, Panic Recovery, Smart ESC and battery telemetry with no extra wires, and a PC programmer app for backing up and sharing setups.
The trade-offs are significant for advanced pilots: it is locked to the DSMX/SRXL2 Spektrum ecosystem, has no built-in governor (it relies on the ESC) and lacks blackbox logging. For Spektrum users who want plug-and-play it is excellent, but it is not the most flexible or feature-rich option for 3D work.
BEASTX and Bavarian Demon
BEASTX (MicroBeast ULTRA, Plus HD and NanoBeast) is known for its EasySetup system, letting you configure the unit at the field with nothing but your radio. It supports a wide range of serial protocols including SBUS, XBUS, EXBUS, iBus, UDI, SRXL2, TBS CRSF, F.Port and SUMD. The main caveat is that key features like rescue, bank switching and telemetry are paid upgrades, with the full ProEdition costing around €99 on top of the base price.
Bavarian Demon's AXON is the premium German alternative, prized for ultra-precise flight control and superb build quality. It offers bank switching, intelligent vibration analysis, a governor for electric and nitro or gasser models, and full configuration straight from a Jeti radio's menu. It supports all the common serial protocols, but has a smaller community and relies on a separate B-module for the mobile app.
Which system should you choose?
If you want open-source flexibility on a budget, Rotorflight is hard to beat. Spektrum users should seriously consider the FC6350HX for its seamless transmitter integration. For the widest radio compatibility, choose the iKON2. Premium 3D performance points to the Mikado VBar EVO, while Spirit is the pick for smooth feel and GPS, BEASTX for easy field setup, and Jeti owners will love the Bavarian Demon AXON or Spirit.
